Step One: I began the drawing and first block in in acrylic to save time. Next, I glazed the entire painting except the white table cloth with transparent red oxide. After that dried, I glazed the darkest areas with a purple oxide. |
Step Two: I switched to oil paint. First I glazed the background and shadows with a mixture of transparent red oxide, alizarine crimson and ultra marine blue. Connecting the shadows and creating lost edges. |
Step Three: Always working back to front, I laid in the gray highlight of the black drape in the background |

Step Four: This is the fun part- painting metal. The trick is to squint and simplify what you see and blur most of the shades and colors on the inside of the form. Find the hard edges in the shadows but blur everything else. |
Step Five: Finish blocking in with color the fruit. Notice that I always worked back to front so that I could overlap my edges. This is as far as I could take the painting in one session. Next time I will re-glaze and add more detail. |
Step Six: Almost finished, I still have some details on the silver bowl and I need to pop the highlights one more time. |
Final Touches: I still want to adjust and add highlights but this is almost where I want to end up. |
