Course Description

This essential practice presents the ultimate challenge to the artist and once mastered, opens up a world of possibilities. Whether you aim to become the next great figurative artist or just find joy in the process of drawing, this course will set you on your path and will give you the tools you need to create a successful body of work!

We emphasize the academic approach to drawing the figure from life and the various techniques and mediums used for rendering three-dimensional form. Composed of 2-week long poses, each student will be given ample time to study the shapes, values and edges of the figure and explore different techniques. Students may choose to work in charcoal, white chalk and graphite or a combination of both. Occasional brief lectures, handouts, assignments and demonstrations will be given.

Matteo Di Ventra

Matteo Di Ventra is an Italian born artist whose obsession with comic books and video games led him to obsessively draw any chance he could. To cultivate his artistic passions, he attended Laguna College of Art and Design and graduated in the Spring of 2020. The school's heavy emphasis on figurative oil painting and classical drawing was an overwhelming challenge for Matteo, but it eventually led to a love and reverence for the tradition of representational painting.

His work consists of portraits, fairytale inspired scenes, and intimate figure studies. He also enjoys creating digital artwork from his imagination that borrows inspiration from video game art and vintage illustrations.
