This course introduces students to the fundamentals of color mixing and the structured process of creating a successful painting. Students will begin by learning to mix colors using a limited palette, create a color wheel, and develop an understanding of color mixing and how to control the mixes effectively.

Working alongside Carlos, each student will select a master painting to copy. Before beginning the full painting, students will learn the importance of creating small preparatory studies to analyze composition, value, and color relationships. The course emphasizes an organized, efficient painting process that leads to stronger and more consistent results.

Starting with a small value study, students will learn to establish the major light and dark shapes, simplify forms, and develop smooth transitions while always working from the general to the specific. They will then apply these principles to their selected painting, progressing through the initial block-in stage with a clear understanding of structure, value, and color organization.

Students will then proceed with the copy of their selected painting, completing the initial block-in stage with a solid understanding of structure, value, color organization, and the principles of direct painting.
